Overall Project

Learning new words through drawing together

Have you ever faced the challenge of communicating with a child who experiences speech delays? I certainly have. In fact, it was this personal journey that led me to discover a creative approach to bridging that gap – and it all started with drawing with my son. We draw together and as we draw, I name each object, helping Sasha learn new words and reinforce those he knows, all while making learning fun. Together, we embark on adventures with a rolled-up piece of paper, creating memories and connections along the way.

Reflection of my final project

Elevator Pitch:
Ever struggled to communicate with a child facing speech delays? My journey led me to a unique solution – drawing with my son. Picture this: a roll of paper sprawled before us, as we embark on a creative adventure, sketching out trains, lakes, and birds. Through this process, we not only explore new vocabulary but also nurture imagination and language skills. Capturing our collaborative artwork, we transform it into a tangible book, celebrating shared moments and learning. This isn't just about communication; it's about building connections and fostering growth.

As I proposed in the beginning, the video features live shots of the drawing process.

Originally I planned to use animated still photography to highlight verbal aspects, animating pieces from the drawings and adding object names. I still am willing to use pop-up objects names, but I omitted the animation due to overwhelming effect.

Project Scope and Duration:

The project involves multiple video takes capturing the drawing process from different angles, aiming for a final duration of 3-4 minutes.

Changes from Original Proposal:

  1. Animation was omitted.

  2. Still drawings were incorporated into the video.

  3. Additional drawing process videos were created and deemed successful.

  4. The book-making aspect was deferred to a future project.

Next steps

Here's the magic part: we capture our collaborative artwork, transforming it into a tangible book that celebrates our shared moments and learning. This method isn't just about communication; it's about building connections and fostering growth.
